Summary:
Estrellita de oro/ Little Gold Star is a story about a young girl, Arcia and it is written in both English and
Spanish. Arcia ebgs her father to marry the single woman next door after her mother's death years ago.
He marries the woman and moves in with her and her two daughters but she's not who she turns out to be.
One day, when Arcia is down by the river washing wool for her father a hawk swoops down and steals
it from her. As she looks up into the sky a star falls down and lands on her forehead and never leaves.
Her two step-sisters are extremely jealous of this and try to get stars on their foreheads but they end up
with a donkey horn and a cow's ear. The prince of the land holds a fancy ball where he falls in love with
Africa but she leaves before he can catch her name or anything about her. At the end of the story the
prince goes from door to door looking for Arcia and eventually finds her despite a few obstacles.

I would love to use this book in my classroom due to its familiar story and the way it is written in two
languages. I also like how it is a spin off of Cinderella but changes the cultural aspects of it and even the
ethical aspects. In addition, the two mean sisters get dreadful things from the haw which I feel my students
would find very amusing. Another aspect I love is the fact that it is written in both Spanish and English,
making it perfect for an ESL classroom.

I feel as if this book would be great in a kindergarten through fifth grade. It is a spin-off of a well known,
Cinderella which I feel will capture children's attention. It also has easy to read sentences and vocabulary
which would be perfect for younger students.

If I were to use this book in my classroom I would first have my kids read it and then discuss what happened in the book. I would then have them read Cinderella as a class and discuss it. Next, I would see if they could make any connections between the original Cinderella and this book. I would then have them make a timeline of the story and explain in pictures the beginning, middle, and end.
