The Magic School Bus Makes A Rainbow

Title: The Magic School Bus Makes A Rainbow
Genre: Science Fiction
Author: Joanna Cole
Major Awards: None
Age Group: 4 - 11 year olds

Summary:
One day in class the students are discussing the different colors and the rainbow. The class finds Ms. Frizzle
playing pinball in a  closet but it’s not an ordinary pinball machine but one that is played with light pulses,
not steel balls. Ms.Frizzle tells the students to line up and she poofs them right inside the pinball machine!
The students start looking around at all of the different mirrors, colorful objects, and prisms. After some
discovering, answering questions, and learning about how colors/rainbows are made the kids finally create
a rainbow inside the game and help Ms.Frizzle win. There is only one issue, the kids can't figure out how
to get out and Ms.Frizzle is busy talking to the principle. After some time the students find their own way
out and blast out of the pinball machine.

I would certainly use this book in my classroom when learning about colors, light, and rainbows. This book
turns these scientific ideas into a fun and easy way of learning. I feel that children of all ages would really
find a liking to this book and it would make a huge impact on their learning when discovering these ideas.

I believe that this book would be great for a plethora of grades such as, pre-k all the way through fifth grade.
The ideas range from learning colors, light rays/reflections, and how colors/rainbows are made. While
younger aged students wouldn't be able to read this book on their own they would understand it if I were to
read it aloud. Older aged students would be able to read this book on their own and conduct their own ideas
and understandings of the book.

I would use this book when discussing colors, light rays, and how colors.rainbows are created. I would have
pre-k- first graders draw and color their own rainbows and discuss the different colors of the rainbow. Also,
I would have them identify different objects that are the colors of the rainbow and discuss them as a class.
For my older students I would have a class discussion of how the colors and rainbows are created and have
them draw their own idea of this. I would then have them do an experiment in which they will be able to use
light rays to create their own rainbows.
