Summary:
The Field Beyond The Outfield is about a young boy by the name of, Ludlow who claims there are monsters
in his closet at night. His parents think he needs to get involved in something to keep his mind off these
monsters, so they sign him up for baseball. During one of Ludlow’s baseball games he is placed way out in
the outfield. He was placed so far out that he happened to see another game going on but this one was
being played by monsters! Ludlow gets invited to play in their game and hits a great ball. After the game
Ludlow goes home and is no longer scared of the monsters in his closet.

I would use this book in my classroom if I was teaching younger aged students. I would use it as a little
lesson to not be scared of monsters or of anything they make up in their heads. I know this is a very common
thing with little kids, so this book shines a light that nothing will hurt them. Also, it is an easy to read book
that has a lot of appealing pictures that I feel younger children would enjoy.

I think this book would be appropriate for students in grades kindergarten- second grade. It has very easy
sentences and colorful pictures that would be appealing to younger children. Pre- k and Kindergartners
would enjoy the pictures and be able to follow along with the story easily. First and second graders would
more than likely be able to read the book on their own and follow along easily as well.

When using this book in my classroom I would first read them the book aloud if I had a pre-k or k class or
have them read it on their own if I had a first or second grade class. Then we would have a group discussion
about what happened in the book and the characters. Next I would have my kids draw their own pictures
of the monsters in the way they see them. I would also keep this book in my class library for students to
read whenever they wanted.
